Third Year is a Charm for Scholarship Program

(Columbus, OHIO) — High school seniors from across the country seem to have their eyes on the prize when it comes to scholarships.

That’s paying off for one Columbus, Ohio-based website company that specializes in the development of Content Management System (CMS) websites and software for the K-12 education industry. It’s Investing In Our Future mentorship and scholarship program is seeing a major uptick in activity this year.

Whether growing in interest among applicants or financial commitment by eSchoolView, the program is celebrating continued success as it dives into its third year. Executive Director, Rob O’Leary wanted to create a program that brings in-demand skill sets to life so students can get a true feel for how they need to be prepared for life beyond graduation. It draws top scholars including one student accepted to Harvard University, another to Princeton University, yet another to Babson College. Some already have experience with college courses.

“We are a service-minded team and want to pay forward to those who will be our leaders some day,” Rob O’Leary said. “We truly believe we have a responsibility to share our knowledge with the students of the school districts we work with.”

The company is so passionate about helping students prepare for their futures that this year it sends one of its team members to a nearby S.T.E.M. school every day to teach coding to middle schoolers.

“We have a young, talented team that has a lot of experience,” O’Leary said. “The connections we have made with the students we meet in class, apply for our scholarships or bring on as interns have been invaluable. It’s a great relationship because we learn a lot from them as well.”

The Web Design and Development Scholarship contest requires students to create sample web pages that are related to a school class or club. Those who entered were required to send along a written or video essay, a mock budget and show a collaborative effort between the entrant and a pseudo client. It drew students interested in programming, web design, entrepreneurship, computer science, engineering and industrial design.

“The entries were really phenomenal, but not only on their merit,” judge Ty Debevoise said, “You can see by the resulting work that the students were really empowered by the need to really to think about the process.”

Scholarships will top at $15,000 in 2014, double the offering in the program’s inaugural year. All told, eSchoolView, a company with less than two dozen employees, invests more than $35,000 annually in helping students develop what educators call 21st Century Skills.

Registrations for the scholarship offerings grew by 315 percent. “Each year is better than the last,” O’Leary said.

Winners for the 2014 program will be announced later this month, with one high school senior set to land the top $5,000 prize; two $2,500 awards will be given and five will win $1,000 scholarships.
